Best laptops for drone owners in 2022

Adding a laptop to your drone flying kit can be a great way to improve your flying experience. You can use a laptop to change settings on the go, check footage you have just recorded in the field, or use maps to track down your drone if you crash.

For content creators a laptop can allow you to fly, stream, edit and upload all from the same location! A laptop is a great tool to add to any flight bag and a must have if you are a professional drone pilot.

Not all laptops are made the same and deciding on the right one to use with drones can be hard if you don’t know much about computers. Don’t stress though, EasyDrone has got you covered with our list of the best laptops for drone owners!

How did we pick the best laptops for drones?

Before we jump into our recommendations, these are the factors we considered to make our choices

You probably already own a computer, so spending thousands on a laptop just for drone use might be a bit too much. We have tried to look for laptops in all price ranges to suit all budgets and have managed to find 3 laptops in Budget, Mid Tier and High end categories.

A laptop for drone use should be small and lightweight so it is easy to add to your drone case or backpack. Most drone backpacks come with a space for a 15.6″ laptop, so we will be looking for a laptops that size and under. The smaller and lighter a laptop is the less you are going to notice carrying it around with the rest of your gear.

Different laptops will have different pros and cons. Some features are a must have like decent storage, long battery life, durability and processing power. The higher end laptops are obviously going to have more and better features than lower budget ones, like the ability to easily edit high quality footage. We made sure that even our budget recommendations are solid choices, with lots of useful features for drone owners.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 11 Chromebook Laptop, 11.6" HD Display, Intel Celeron N4020, 4GB RAM, 64GB Storage, Intel UHD Graphics 600, Chrome OS

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 11 Chromebook

This is about as basic as you can get without buying a tablet. This tiny Chromebook made by Lenovo is so small and lightweight that you will barely notice having it with you. It is also incredibly cheap, coming in at around $150.

A big thing to note with the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 that this tiny laptop runs Chrome OS, not Windows. So it’s great if you want to run your favourite Android apps on a device with a larger screen, but not so great if you need access to Windows programs.

The cheap price and small size means you’re not going to be editing footage or even reviewing it confidently. It doesn’t have many features, but it’s useful for using things like checking maps, weather reports or even as a place to dump some footage so you can free up space on a SD card and then keep recording new flights.

HP Stream 14 inch HD

HP Stream 14inch HD(1366x768) Display, Intel Celeron N4000 Dual-Core Processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, HDMI, WiFi, Webcam, Bluetooth, Win10 S, Rose Pink (Renewed)

This is another basic laptop that is great for drone owners. The main benefit of this small laptop made by HP is that it runs Windows 11. Running Windows means it’s really useful for FPV and long range drone pilots who need access to programs like Betaflight, INAV or Ardupilot.

You are not going to be using a low end laptop like this for editing videos,, but with some decent basic features this HP laptop is also perfect for camera drone owners who want an easy way to check maps or upgrade firmware on the go. It’s also very well priced and easy to find for sale online. The laptop we have linked to is renewed (which is why it is so cheap), so take that into consideration when buying this one.

Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R3UB | 15.6″

Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R3UB | 15.6" Full HD IPS Display | AMD Ryzen 3 3350U Quad-Core Mobile Processor | 4GB DDR4 | 128GB NVMe SSD | WiFi 6 | Backlit KB | FPR | Amazon Alexa | Windows 11 Home in S mode

This is the most popular budget laptop on Amazon and for good reason. This full sized 15.6” laptop made by ACER won’t go unnoticed in your flight bag, but it makes up for that with lots of great features. Compared with the other budget laptops we have covered it offers much more in the way of video editing. You are still not going to be able to edit and render 4K drone footage, but simple editing of lower quality 1080p footage is definitely possible.

With a large screen and Windows 11 this ACER laptop is great for drone owners who need access to Windows programs out in the field. It’s also perfect for live streaming your flights, storing extra footage or checking weather and maps before you fly.

This is easily the best entry level laptop in the budget category that we could find.

Mid Tier Category – Under $1100

HP Envy X360 2-in-1 13.3 inch FHD IPS Touch-Screen Laptop

HP Envy X360 2-in-1 13.3 inch FHD IPS Touch-Screen Laptop | 11th Generation Intel Core i5-1135G7 Backlit Keyboard Fingerprint Windows 10 Home (8GB DDR4 RAM 256GB SSD |Mouse Pad), Gold

This laptop from HP is the perfect mix between size, features and price. The HP ENVY X360 has a 13.3” screen so it can easily be placed into a flight bag without taking up too much space. For its size it still has really good processing power, meaning it can easily handle any drone program you can throw at it. It can even do basic editing and has a decently sized 256GB harddrive for storing your extra footage.

The feature that we think sets this laptop aside from others is the touch screen. Having a touch screen is a useful feature for professional drone pilots who use software to pre-program routes for drones to fly. Agricultural drones that are used to spray crops for example could use the touch screen to easily trace out a flight path for a drone to follow. The touch screen is also useful for easily updating a setting without having to use a mouse or keyboard, making it great for pilots who need to keep their eye on the sky as much as possible.

This mid tier laptop is the perfect entry level laptop for professional pilots, or for any drone owner who wants a really decent but still small sized laptop that can easily fit into any drone backpack.

2022 ASUS VivoBook Business Laptop

2022 ASUS VivoBook Business Laptop, 15.6" FHD Touchscreen, Intel Core i5-1135G7 (Beats i7-1065G7), Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 20GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint, SonicMaster Audio, Win11

The Asus VivoBook has everything you could want in a mid tier drone laptop. It has a full size 15.6” screen

The 1TB harddrive is a huge selling point. This is more than enough storage to save hundreds of HD videos, so it’s great for people who travel or for professionals dealing with larger file sizes that come with high quality 4K footage.

The Asus VivoBook also has a touch screen, so like the HP Envy we covered above it’s a great option for professionals who want a one touch way to change settings during flights.

If you prefer a larger laptop screen the Asus VivoBook is our pic for best mid tier drone laptop.

Lenovo – Legion 5 – Gaming Laptop

Lenovo - Legion 5 - Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 5800H - 16GB RAM - 512GB Storage - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti - 15.6" FHD Display - Windows 11 Home - Phantom Blue

At the far end of the mid tier range we have the Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop. Gaming laptops need to be more powerful than regular laptops so they can run high demanding games. This means gaming laptops can be great for things like video editing and rendering, which require more processing and video power to run confidently.

The Lenovo Legion 5 has the latest generation of NVIDIA graphics processors, with a 3050ti. There is also a healthy 16gb of ram and 500gb of storage.

If you are looking for a laptop you can use for editing high quality drone footage without spending a crazy amount of money, the Legion 5 may be the perfect laptop for you. It’s powerful enough to be able to be used at home as well as with your drones, so we think it’s a pretty good investment all around as well.

The Lenovo Legion 5 is the heaviest of all of the laptops on our list, weighing around 5.10 pounds. That’s not an insignificant amount of weight to carry around in a backpack.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus VR-Ready Gaming Laptop

ASUS ROG Zephyrus VR-Ready Gaming Laptop, 15.6" QHD (2560x1440) IPS 165Hz, AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, RGB Backlit KB, USB-C, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 , Win 10, 16GB RAM, 1TB PCIe SSD +Accessories

ASUS gets another entry in our list, this time in the high end category. The ASUS ROG Zephyus is a seriously powerful gaming laptop. It is designed to run even the most demanding of modern games and that makes it an amazing laptop for editing and rendering high quality 4K footage.

All of that power means it is also capable of running lots of complex tasks at once – so you can record, live stream, chat with friends and download some maps all at the same time.

This is a full sized 15.6” screen laptop with a beautiful high resolution screen. The QHD (2560×1440) IPS 165Hz display makes viewing and editing your recorded footage a dream.

The processing power and QHD screen make this the perfect laptop for content creators who don’t want to ever be held back by a slow computer.  It’s also great for any drone pilot, both amature and professional, who want a laptop that will handle anything they throw at it.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15

ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2022) Gaming Laptop, 15.6” 300Hz IPS FHD Display, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti,Intel Core i9 12900H, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, Per-Key RGB Keyboard, Windows 11 Home, G533ZW-AS94

This is another high end gaming laptop from Asus. If you thought the Asus ROG Zephyrus we covered above was impressive, their ROG Strix Scar 15 will blow you away.

This beast of a laptop has a 3070ti graphics card, 1TB of storage, ultra fast 16gb of DDR5 ram, an incredibly powerful Intel i9 processor and a beautiful FHD 15.6” 300hz screen.  All of that means you get some serious upgrades in every area when compared with the ROG Zephyus, for only roughly $200 more.

This laptop is powerful enough to handle any drone footage, any task, in any situation. It’s perfect for people who want the best of the best, but within reason. This laptop still comes in at a respectable $2K USD, which is a great deal when you factor in how good it is at being a laptop.  The one main drawback of the ROG Strix Scar 15 is it is definitely on the heavy side, weighing just over 5 pounds.

(there is also a cheaper option of the same laptop with a 3060 graphics card and 512gb of storage space)

2021 MacBook Pro

2021 Apple MacBook Pro (14-inch, Apple M1 Pro chip with 10‑core CPU and 16‑core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD) - Space Gray

If all that matters to you is being able to edit footage then you might want to consider Apple. In fact it’s pretty hard to talk about laptops without mentioning Apple.

Apple has been making laptops for years that are loved by graphic designers and creative types alike. Apple knows how to make a powerful laptop in a small package that is optimised for content creation. Their 2021 Apple MacBook is no different and it is a beast when it comes to video editing and rendering. It also has a stunning 14” display to help you see every last detail in your drone footage.

The Apple Macoobk isn’t going to be for everyone however. Some drone programs can only be run in Windows and it’s not exactly cheap. This version of the Macbook retails for around $2500 USD, so it’s a big investment if all you are using it for is drone footage.

If you love the Apple eco system and want an ultra powerful laptop for drone content creation, the Macbook could be the perfect laptop for you!

Hopefully our roundup of the best drone laptops has helped to point you in the right direction.

As for which laptops we think are the best overall, in the budget category it is hard to not recommend the Acer Aspire 5. It has all the basic features you need in a low end laptop at a really good price.

In the mid tier range we really like HP Envy X360, mainly because of its small size and touch screen feature.

As for the high category we think the ASUS ROG Zephyrus is the perfect mix of performance, size and price. The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 is also an amazing machine if you can stretch your budget by around $200 USD, but is a little heavier than the Scar 15.
